A St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana Sheriff's Office police dog who was stabbed during a confrontation with a suspect Tuesday afternoon is recovering following surgery.

K-9 Thor was involved in an hours-long manhunt for Darien Greenwood when the 30-year-old brandished a switchblade, lunged at a deputy and stabbed the dog after it intervened, according to The Times-Picayune.

Deputies shot and killed Greenwood, who was being sought in a burglary, after the stabbing. Thor sustained wounded to the neck and shoulder and was transported to MedVet in Mandeville.

"There's a very good chance he should be able to recover and get back on the street,'' Dr. David Kergosien told reporters Wednesday.

"He's an incredible dog and an incredible partner -- and it truly is a partnership. That bond becomes one that's incredible," St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain.
