2 N.J. Police Officers Injured Serving Warrant in Deadly Shooting

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ—At least two police officers were injured, and a civilian died during a shooting Tuesday afternoon in the 100 block of North Florida Avenue, officials said.

The state Attorney General's Office is investigating and said no further information — including the identities of those involved — was being released at this time.

Police said multiple officers were removed from the scene for medical treatment and transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. One officer sustained life-threatening injuries.

There was no ongoing threat to the public, police said in a statement Tuesday evening.

Mayor Marty Small Sr. said the officers were in stable condition.

“The fine men and women in blue of the Atlantic City Police Department put their lives on the line every day to protect our community, and I am grateful for their courage. We truly have the best police department in the world. My thoughts and prayers are with the two Atlantic City police officers who were wounded this afternoon, as well as their families, and the entire Atlantic City Police Department during this difficult time. We are hopeful for their full and speedy recovery."

He referred additional questions to the Police Department and the Attorney General's Office.

"Please join me in keeping the two Atlantic City Police officers wounded in the line of duty today in your thoughts and prayers," said state Sen. Vince Polistina, R- Atlantic, in a post on social media. "Our law enforcement officers put themselves in harm’s way to protect our communities. We are grateful for their courage, dedication, and service."

A heavy police presence was visible just before 3 p.m. Traffic was diverted from the area, including at one point down South Florida Avenue, to make room for ambulances and other emergency vehicles.

Dozens of bystanders were also on the corners watching the scene unfold.

Later Tuesday, police warned of traffic congestion on Albany Avenue, Arctic Avenue, Atlantic Avenue and Pacific Avenue between Brighton and Ohio avenues as a result of the investigation.

A 2019 law requires the Attorney General’s Office to conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody. It requires that all such investigations be presented to a grand jury to determine whether the evidence supports the return of an indictment against the officer or officers involved.
