A Texas deputy and a Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper were shot and critically wounded Saturday were trying to arrest a suspect wanted on a half-dozen warrants during a deadly standoff.

The shooting happened when a Wood County sheriff's deputy and a DPS trooper were part of a response trying to serve a suspect wanted on six felony warrants near an intersection, KTEK-TV reports. That's when the suspect opened fired with a semiautomatic firearm.

The deputy and the trooper were struck by the shots, and they were rushed to the hospital. Although they were critically wounded, both law enforcement officers are expected to recover.

"We are thankful to report that both remain in stable condition," Texas Municipal Police Association Director Luke Shafer told KTEK. "One officer is undergoing surgery after multiple gunshot wounds. The other remains in ICU as doctors evaluate next steps. Both are in good spirits and surrounded by family and support."

Following the shooting, the suspect barricaded himself inside a home, and the Wood County Special Response Team and the Texas Rangers were called to the scene. The suspect continued to fire on authorities, who spent several hours trying to de-escalate.

Police used tear gas and other methods to force the suspect to surrender, but the tactics were unsuccessful. Finally, officers entered the home, and police exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

The suspect was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The identities of the suspect, as well as the wounded deputy and trooper, have not been released. The suspect was wanted on multiple charges, including unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, theft of a firearm and evading arrest with a vehicle.
