• Officers initially responded to a Nov. 18 assault call and found a victim with a severe hand injury from a machete attack.

• The shooting remains under investigation.

A suspect accused of attacking a man with a large machete fought off Tasers and other less-lethal measures to charge at Oklahoma police officers with the edged weapon before he was fatally shot last month.

The incident happened shortly after 2:15 p.m. Nov. 18 when Oklahoma City police responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon, Capt. Valerie Littlejohn said in a video posted to social media.  When officers reached the scene, they found a male victim who had sustained a serious hand injury from a machete attack.

Officers searched the area and located Benson nearby. They confronted Benson and told him to drop the machete, but he fled on foot.

Once Benson was surrounded, officers deployed two Tasers, as well as 40mm less-lethal rounds in an effort to disarm the suspect. That was unsuccessful, and Benson charged at officers, still brandishing a machete and telling officers to kill him.

"As he closed the distance, officers discharged their firearms, striking him," Littlejohn said in the video.

Benson was rushed to the officer, where he later died.

The shooting is under investigation.
