Two West Virginia National Guard members were killed in a shooting near the White House in Washington, D.C., according to reports.
Police apprehended a suspect in the shooting, and he is believed to be in critical condition, an official told ABC News. Officers had responded to an active shooter incident just before 2:30 p.m. Farragut West Metro station.
"These brave West Virginians lost their lives in the service of their country," said West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey. "We are in ongoing contact with federal officials as the investigation continues."
Along with D.C. police, that investigation includes representatives from the FBI, ATF and U.S. Marshals Service. Homeland Security also is working with police, and the White House was put in lockdown following the shooting.
No details have been released about a motive behind the shooting or what led to the incident.
"Our entire state grieves with their families, their loved ones, and the Guard community," said Morrisey. "West Virginia will never forget their service or their sacrifice, and we will demand full accountability for this horrific act."
National Guard members have been in D.C. since August. They were deployed as part of the Trump administration's takeover in order to crackdown on crime.
"The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen … and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price," President Donald Trump, who is in Florida for Thanksgiving, wrote on social media. "God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement."
