At least two people have been killed and three others injured in a shooting at a family-owned Delaware County business.
The incident occurred at Delaware County Linen, located in the 2600 block of West Fourth Street in Chester at about 8:30 a.m. today, as the business was getting ready to open, according to reports from the Philadelphia Inquirer and NBC10.
Chester Mayor Stefan Roots described the incident to the Inquirer as a “workplace shooting” but an exact motive is not yet known.
Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said during a press briefing that at least five people were shot and two of them had died. The other victims were sent to a hospital. One of them is listed in critical condition.
Stollsteimer added that the suspect, a former employee at the store, was in police custody. He was arrested in nearby Trainer after leaving the scene.
“This is a story that plays out too often across the United States of America,” he said during the briefing, according to NBC10. “A disgruntled employee has walked into a linen shop — the Delaware County Linen shop behind us — and shot five people, five coworkers.”
“This is a sad situation,” Chester Police Commissioner Steven Gretsky said to NBC10.
“I’m telling you it was insanity,” a worker at the industrial laundromat said in Spanish to the Inquirer. “I’m telling you if I hadn’t run… he was coming after everyone like crazy, I didn’t know where to go but he went straight after two guys.”
Other employees told the Inquirer that there were about 40-50 people working there this morning.
Delaware County Linen provides tablecloths, bed linens and other products to restaurants, country clubs, hotels and other business in Pennsylvania and several surrounding states.
