ST. LOUIS — An off-duty officer exchanged gunfire with several people early Monday in the city's Tower Grove South neighborhood.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. when a 41-year-old off-duty officer interrupted the group of people breaking into cars near Alfred Avenue and Hartford Street, police said.
They shot at the officer, who returned fire. Police said the officer was not injured and was able to arrest one of the suspects, a 15-year-old boy. The teenager had been sitting in the driver's seat of the car they had broken into, police said.
The teenager was booked into the city's juvenile detention center.
The others drove off in a white Hyundai Sonata, which was found abandoned shortly thereafter.
The car had been reported stolen on Saturday.
Police do not know if anyone who got away had been shot.
