One person was killed and four Sonoma County sheriff's deputies were wounded early Monday morning following a shootout in west Santa Rosa, officials said.
Sheriff's officials said the incident unfolded shortly after midnight, when deputies responded to a report of a person brandishing a rifle in unincorporated west Santa Rosa, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.
The person fled in a vehicle when confronted by law enforcement officials, the sheriff's office said, stopping at times to allegedly fire shots at deputies.
"Deputies returned fire and, ultimately, the suspect crashed the vehicle he was driving," the sheriff's office said in a statement. Officials did not specify where the crash occurred.
Four deputies were injured, sheriff's officials said. One was shot in the leg, two sustained injuries to their hands, and one deputy who sustained a head injury was hospitalized and listed in critical but stable condition. The person the deputies were pursuing was pronounced dead at the scene. That person's identity was not immediately disclosed, and it was not immediately clear whether death occurred in the gunfight or from injuries sustained in the crash.
The Santa Rosa Police Department will take over the investigation of the shooting, sheriff's officials said, and body-worn camera footage of the incident will be released in accordance with state law.
