Maryland police fatally shot a suspect early Tuesday who is believed to be connected in a series of Washington, D.C., carjackings, including an incident that left one person dead.
Two New Carrollton police officers confronted a man in a laundromat parking lot at around 5 a.m. after locating a Nissan Rogue that had been carjacked in D.C. earlier, WUSA-TV reports. The suspect was struck when the officers opened fire, and at 8 a.m., officials said he died at the hospital.
A string of carjackings and an ensuing manhunt for the suspect led up to the shooting in Prince George's County. One person was shot and killed and another person was critically wounded during the crime spree.
"The violence we saw yesterday was senseless and tragic, and we know that two families are experiencing an unthinkable tragedy," said D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, according to WJLA-TV.
The suspect is accused of committing the following carjackings Monday night in D.C. before he was fatally shot in New Carrollton, according to the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department:

- 7:05 p.m.: The suspect tried to carjack another vehicle but failed.

- Before 3 a.m.: The suspect allegedly carjacked a Toyota Camry, which he later abandoned. He then carjacked a Nissan Rogue that belonged to a rideshare driver.
- 3 a.m.: A D.C. police officer spotted the suspect in the stolen Rogue along Interstate 295. The suspect shot at the officer's vehicle before fleeing.
