A South Carolina deputy is in critical condition after he was struck by gunfire when a traffic stop turned into a chase Thursday.
The incident began at about noon as Oconee County sheriff's deputies pulled over a Chevrolet Silverado, WHNS-TV reports. But the suspect sped away, and deputies gave pursuit.
Once the chase ended, the suspect opened fire, and a deputy was shot and wounded. He was airlifted to the hospital as authorities continued pursuing the suspect.
Finally, deputies caught up with the suspect, who was struck by gunfire. The suspect was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery.
The wounded deputy also underwent surgery. The sheriff's office did not release details on his condition. Officers from law enforcement officers from around the area gathered outside the hospital following the shooting.
Sheriff Mike Crenshaw said the shooting was "an isolated incident," and the Greenville County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
