At least five people were killed and a toddler and teen were injured when a gunman armed with two firearms and wearing body armor went on a rampage in southwest Philadelphia on Monday.
The incident happened at about 8:30 a.m. in the city's Kingsessing neighborhood, WCAU-TV reports. Police officers were flagged down after gunshots broke out in the area.
When officers reached the scene, they found several people with gunshot wounds. As they were helping the victims, more shots were fired, and police found shell casings at the new locations before hearing gunfire again.
This time, officers spotted the gunman and began pursuing him. The suspect fired at police, but then surrendered when he was cornered in an alley.
"We have absolutely no idea why this happened," Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said during a press conference. "This person decided to leave their home and target individuals."
When officers apprehended the man, they recovered a police scanner, an AR-style rifle and a handgun. He also was wearing bulletproof vest carrying multiple magazines.
