An off-duty Rutland County sheriff's deputy was shot multiple times by Saratoga Springs police after a scuffle between the deputy and a group of people erupted into a shootout.

Police in New York shot an off-duty Vermont sheriff's deputy multiple times after a shootout erupted between the deputy and another group early Sunday.

The shooting began at about 3 a.m. in a nightlife district in Saratoga Springs, NBC News reports. The gunfire was sparked by a fight that broke out between an off-duty Rutland County sheriff's deputy and a group of people.

According to authorities, at least three people attacked the deputy and threw him against the hood of a car and then on the ground. As he got back up, the deputy pulled back his coat to reveal a handgun. A member of the group then pulled a gun, and the shooting began.

One of the individuals in the group was struck by gunfire, and the shots were heard by nearby Saratoga Springs police officers. When they reached the scene, they saw the deputy brandishing his weapon.

The officers ordered the deputy multiple times to drop his gun, but he didn't comply. Police then fired 11 shots, and the deputy dropped to the ground. Officials said the deputy had 10 bullet wounds, but it hadn't been determined which were entry or exit wounds.

The deputy and two other people were injured and taken to the hospital. Two of the injured individuals are still in the hospital in stable condition.

The New York State Police are investigating the incident, and no arrests have been made. The shooting is the first time an on-duty Saratoga Springs police officer had to discharge a weapon in nearly 30 years, said Commissioner of Public Safety James Montagnino.
