A man who was assaulting two North Carolina deputies during a call was shot by an unknown passerby Thursday.
The incident began just before 2:30 p.m. as Lenoir County sheriff's deputies were responding to a trespassing call, WNCT-TV reports. While the deputies were at the scene of the call, an individual called 9-1-1 and told a dispatcher that the deputies required help with an out-of-control suspect.
Shortly before 3 p.m., a "shots fired" radio call came from one of the deputies. According to the authorities, a passerby witnessing the incident felt the deputies were overwhelmed, and he opened fire at the suspect in an effort to help the deputies.
At least one shot struck the suspect, who was taken to the hospital. Details about his condition and the extent of his injuries were not released.
Both deputies required some medical treatment, but the nature of their injuries was not released.
Investigators collected video footage shot by witnesses. Although the deputies' body cameras were knocked off during the incident, they were later recovered from the scene.
No charges have been filed yet in connection with the incident.
