Off-Duty NYPD Detective Fires Shot Trying to Foil Armed Robbery

When an off-duty NYPD detective witnessed two suspects jump out of an SUV and hold up a man at gunpoint in New York City's East Harlem area, he opened fire trying to stop the crime.

An off-duty NYPD detective fired a shot while trying to break up an armed robbery Monday.

The incident happened at around 11:30 a.m. in New York City's East Harlem neighborhood, WNYW-TV reports. That's when an off-duty NYPD detective witnessed two suspects jumping out of an SUV to hold up a man at gunpoint.

The detective approached the armed suspects in an effort to stop the crime, and he fired a shot when one of the suspects turned toward him. The gunfire made the suspect drop his gun, and the SUV fled with the suspects inside.

No one was struck by the detective's shot. He was taken to the hospital for tinnitus.

Police are searching for at least three suspects in the incident, but no arrests have been made yet.
