KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI—A suspect was arrested after allegedly shooting a deputy and stealing a police cruiser.

At 8:51 a.m. Friday, July 17, deputies were on the 6300 East AB Avenue in Richland Township for a report of a larceny from an auto in progress.

During the encounter, the deputy was shot after a struggle with the suspect. The suspect then stole the deputy’s cruiser, resulting in a chase that went through different parts of Kalamazoo County.

The chase ended with a crash in Kalamazoo Township near the sheriff’s office.

The suspect was taken into custody and is receiving treatment before being lodged.

The deputy received care at hospital in Plainwell before being taken to another local hospital for further treatment. The deputy is in stable condition, the sheriff’s office said.

Detectives are investigating.
