A Stevens County Sheriff's deputy was shot and injured early Tuesday while responding to a home burglary in Suncrest.

The deputy underwent surgery Tuesday morning and is expected to recover, a dispatcher with the Stevens County Sheriff's Office said.

Stevens County Sheriff Brad Manke wrote in a Tuesday evening press release that the homeowner, who was not home at the time, called dispatch to report an intruder after they watched video footage of someone breaking into their garage. Deputies responded, entered the home and were immediately met with gunfire, according to the press release.

The injured deputy returned gunfire until being "extracted" from the scene and taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.

The shooting occurred at a home in the 16000 block of North Suncrest Drive. A couple who lives at the home had a domestic dispute in late March in which the man tied his wife up with zip ties, according to court records. He had a gun and threatened to kill her. The man's family later told law enforcement he wanted to "go out in a blaze of glory" and "engage in an officer-involved shooting."

The man was eventually charged with multiple domestic violence crimes such as assault, harassment and unlawful imprisonment. He kept multiple firearms in the home, according to court records. His wife and daughter were granted a protection order and the case was set to go to trial this summer.

After the deputy was shot, law enforcement tried negotiating with the suspect inside the home, but he eventually cut off all communication. Law enforcement then deployed a drone into the home only to find the suspect dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the press release.

Investigators have not released the shooting suspect's name.

The Washington State Patrol is the lead agency investigating the circumstances surrounding the deputy firing their weapon. When a deputy or officer fires their weapon, law enforcement agencies that are members of the state's "Independent Investigation Team" attempt to determine if the officer's use of deadly force was justified.

The Stevens County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Spokane County Sheriff's Office, Spokane Police Department, Washington State Patrol, Stevens County Fire District 1, Deer Park Ambulance, Spokane County Fire District 9 and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
