What to know

• Three Omaha police officers were wounded in a gunfire exchange with a shooting suspect who was fatally shot after allegedly opening fire from a gas-station bathroom.

• Officers had tracked the suspect’s vehicle from the initial crime, and two were struck by gunfire while a third was struck by shrapnel.

• A civilian inside the bathroom escaped unharmed, and the earlier grocery-store victim remains in critical condition as the investigation continues.

Police ordered the suspect to exit the bathroom, but the man allegedly opened fire. An officer was wounded, and police retreated outside the main bathroom door to tactically position themselves, the department stated.

The suspect came out of the bathroom and began shooting. Another officer was wounded, but police were able to return fire, fatally shooting the suspect.

A third officer also was struck by shrapnel, and all three officers were rushed to the hospital. One officer was treated and released, while the other two remain hospitalized.

Mayor John Ewing Jr. said during the update at the scene that he had concerns for the original shooting victim, who was grocery shopping before they were shot by the suspect.

“I commend the officers for great police work and bravery they showed in getting the plate, and following up on that and doing what was necessary to try and complete an arrest,” Mayor John Ewing Jr. said at the scene, according to WOWT-TV.

A civilian had been inside the bathroom when the suspect initially began firing. But the man was able to escape before the second exchange of gunfire.

The shooting is under investigation.
