A Camden County police officer and a suspect were injured in a shooting Tuesday night in Camden, officials said.

While the officer is in stable condition, a suspect was critically injured in the exchange of gunfire, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office said Wednesday.

The shooting took place at about 10:50 p.m. near the corner of Chesapeake and Congress roads in the Fairview section, authorities said.

The prosecutor’s office charged the suspect — a man who has not been named — with attempted murder and weapons offenses.

A bullet might have bounced off the officer’s bulletproof vest and him in the arm, according to a report.

“There is some bruising on his chest so it does appear a round did strike the (bulletproof) vest,” Camden County Police Chief Gabriel Rodriguez said of the in an on-camera interview with 6abc.com. “I don’t know if that’s the same round that entered his arm.”

The state Office of the Attorney General is heading the investigation as it does when a police officer shoots someone.
