SPRINGFIELD, MA — A city police officer was shot in the temple on his way into work on Wednesday.

The officer, who has yet to be identified, was shot just after 10:30 p.m. in the area of 600 State St. The shooting tripped off a series of road closures from the area of the shooting to the South End bridge and other portions of Interstate 91.

The officer was airlifted to a Boston hospital this morning and is expected to survive, police said.

It is yet unclear whether the officer, who was in uniform, was targeted, but officials say he found himself in the middle of “a larger event.”

Several arrests were made overnight, including that of the suspected shooter.
