Phoenix Police Officer Wounded, Suspect Fatally Shot in Traffic Stop Shootout

A Phoenix police officer and a suspect were struck by gunfire when a shooting erupted following a struggle between police and a driver during a traffic stop.

A Phoenix police officer was shot and wounded early Tuesday in a shooting during a traffic stop that left a suspect dead.

The incident happened shortly before 3:45 a.m. at a city intersection as police were trying to make a traffic stop, KTVK-TV reports. A struggle ensued during the stop, and the driver pulled out a gun and began shooting.

One officer was shot and wounded in the leg as police returned fire. The suspect was struck in the exchange, and he was rushed to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The wounded officer was taken to the hospital in stable condition. The officer was awaiting surgery for his injuries.
