Iowa Sheriff's Deputy Shot; Escaped Inmate Sought

    Aug. 19, 2013
The deputy was allegedly shot twice by an escaped inmate who took off in his cruiser late Sunday.

A Taylor County Sheriff's deputy was allegedly shot by an escaped inmate late Sunday night.

Authorities said the deputy was wounded by Rodney Long on Iowa Highway 2 near New Market around 11:25 p.m., according to The Des Moines Register.

The unidentified deputy was shot twice after leaving his cruiser to check on a man walking along the highway. The suspect stole the deputy's vehicle after wounding him.

A responding deputy picked up his injured colleague and began pursuing the suspect. The cruiser was recovered about 40 minutes later after pursuit, which included gunfire.

Police say Long, who escaped from a minimum-security prison facility in Clarinda on Friday morning, took off on foot and is currently being sought.

A manhunt involving a dozen law enforcement agencies from Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska has been underway since the shooting.

The deputy was flown to an Omaha, Neb. hospital and is listed in stable conditions with non-life-threatening injuries.
