Officers were encountered by a group of five to six men who allegedly shot at them and fled on foot.

Five men are behind bars after allegedly opening fire on Menlo Park officers, a police spokeswoman said Monday.

Officers went to the 1100 block of Hollyburne Avenue at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday on a report of a man with a gun. When they arrived, they encountered a group of five to six men who allegedly shot at them and fled on foot.

No officers were injured and one returned fire, according to police spokeswoman Nicole Acker.

Police immediately arrested two men and recovered a firearm. They then cordoned off the area and searched backyards with help from the California Highway Patrol and the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office and Redwood City SWAT teams. Four other suspects were eventually apprehended.

One of the men suffered minor injuries and was taken to Stanford Hospital for treatment, Acker said.

East Palo Alto residents Fredrick Tippons, 31, Luis Mariscal, 26, and Raymond Bradford, 25, were booked into county jail for parole violations. Police also booked Breen Hawkins, 19, of San Mateo, for a parole violation and Edward Lewis, 30, on suspicion of possessing a firearm and a controlled substance.

The sixth man who was arrested Sunday has yet to be booked into jail, according to Acker.

During their search of the shooting scene, officers found four additional weapons: two handguns and two rifles. Acker said it wasn't yet clear why the men were so heavily armed or what they were doing in the area.

A spokesman for the

San Mateo County District Attorney's Office said Monday it had yet to receive the case from the police department.

Anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information about it is asked to call police at 650-330-6300 or the anonymous tip line at 650-330-6395.
