A call to a domestic disturbance this morning has resulted in a Lake City, Minn., police officer being shot in the head and critically injured.

According to a news article published by the local newspaper, the Red Wing Republican Eagle, the officer was responding to an incident involving a handgun. The newspaper was quoting from a source with the Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office.

Two shots were fired, but it’s unknown if the officer was shot once or twice, the news report states, adding the officer was transported by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. The officer was listed in critical condition this morning.

A lockdown of Lake City public schools was imposed as a precaution as the shooting happened three blocks from Lincoln High School. An alert was sent out to parents about the situation and a SWAT team was called in at about 10 a.m. Central Time, according to the newspaper. Houses in the area were also being evacuated.

Officers on the scene were initially unclear whether the alleged shooter was barricaded in his home, but law officials surrounding the home haven’t seen him leave either, according to the newspaper.

Goodhue County Sheriff Scott McNurlin told the newspaper that officers from his department as well as the Red Wing department and Wabasha and Olmsted counties were summoned to the scene. A press conference was scheduled for later this afternoon.
