SOUTH HOUSTON, Texas --

An off-duty police officer killed a suspect in a convenience store robbery and shooting, detectives said.

City of South Houston police said the man shot two customers during a robbery at the Citgo station in the 500 block of College Avenue near state Highway 3 on Friday afternoon.

Detectives said the officer, who was in uniform in his personal car, pulled up to a gas pump and discovered the robbery was happening.

"It's kind of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but under the circumstances, him being an officer, he was certainly in the right place at the right time," Police Chief Herbert Gilbert said.

The officer and suspect exchanged shots a short distance from the store, police said.

The suspect was fatally wounded, investigators said. His name has not been released.

Detectives said one of the customers was found inside the store and the other was found outside the store. One was shot in the stomach and one was shot in the back, police said. Both were hospitalized in critical condition.

The officer involved in the shooting was not injured.
