MILWAUKEE --
A Milwaukee police officer shot and killed a man early Sunday morning after the man shot at the officer, according to a police news release.
Police said the incident began when a woman called police and said that her ex-boyfriend was attempting to kick in the door of her house in the 3100 block of North 44th Street.
When officers arrived at 5:25 a.m., the man, who had gained entry to the house, shot several times at one of the officers, according to a police news release. The officer returned fire, striking the man and killing him.
The man, who was identified only as a 37-year-old man with a criminal arrest history for gun offenses, drugs, battery and domestic violence, was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer was not injured in the shooting, police said.
Police said the officer involved in the shooting was a 37-year-old man assigned to District 7. He has five years of service.
"Once again, our officers have prevailed in an encounter with an armed criminal. I am grateful that the officers will return to their families at the end of watch," Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn said.
The incident was under investigation by the Milwaukee Police Department and the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.
The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative duty pending the completion of the investigation.
A department spokeswoman said that seven Milwaukee police officers have been shot in the line of duty in the last three-and-a-half years.
