Stop Wasting Time Repeating Wasted Effort

March 13, 2018
While we try to figure out the best method(s) for reducing school shootings, how about if we simply stop wasting time saying we should do something that's already been done and didn't work?

A lady asked of me, “Do you think anyone really needs an assault rifle? The average everyday citizen?”  It seems a simple question. If you read it word for word, read nothing into it and don’t want to argue the terminology used, the obvious answer is no. The average everyday citizen has no need of an assault rifle.  Now that I’ve typed that, it occurs to me that someone, somewhere will copy and paste that ONE sentence, completely without any other context, and quote me: “See? Frank Borelli said THIS.”  Let’s be fair and impartial.  If you’re going to quote me, quote the whole thing in context.  I put some controls on that answer. Read the question word for word. DO NOT read anything into it. DO NOT argue terminology. Those controls in place, why would I give such an answer?

A statistic I see fairly often is that roughly 3% of our American population is military veterans. That means 97% are not. Another statistic I see is that there are roughly one million sworn police officers in our nation. Out of a population of 330 million or more, that means law enforcement professionals make up about three one-thousandths of one percent of our population. So if you add the two together, you still end up at roughly three percent (3%). That means that the other 97% of the population is what I’m referring to when I think “average everyday citizen.” Does that average everyday citizen NEED an assault rifle? The easy answer is no. Why would they? What are they going to do on a daily basis that they need such a weapon for?
