A Rochester police officer was wounded during a shootout with a homicide suspect Thursday afternoon.
Police stopped a vehicle driven by 31-year-old Ralph Strong shortly after 4 p.m. near the intersection of North Goodman and Yates when an exchange of gunfire occurred, according to The Democrat and Chronicle.
Officials said that the incident began when Strong left his vehicle and was confronted by Sgt. Flamur Zenelovic and the two began shooting at each other.
The officer was shot multiple times in the upper body and fell to the ground while his fellow offers returned fire, hitting the suspect.
The 10-year department veteran was transported to Rochester General Hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries.
Strong was wanted in a double homicide that occurred outside a nightclub Monday morning and was hospitalized and in police custody.
Bystander Gene McDougal was struck in the lower body and was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital.
The incident is currently under investigation.
