An off-duty police detective accidentally shot himself at a SouthPark-area movie theater Wednesday night.

Police have not released the name of the officer, who was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries. A statement from Charlotte-Mecklenburg police says investigators were waiting to make sure the detective's family was notified before releasing the name.

The incident happened at the Phillips Place movie theater near Fairview and Colony Roads just after 9 p.m. Police have not said whether the detective was inside or outside of the theater when the gun went off.

Noticing the injury, the detective notified an officer who was working at the movie theater. That officer called paramedics.

CMPD plans to conduct a shooting investigation while detectives with the Internal Affairs Unit conduct a parallel investigation to determine whether or not CMPD policies and procedures were followed, which is standard procedure when an officer discharges his firearm.

Crime scene technicians were called to the scene to collect evidence.
