Buckeye police officers fatally shot a suspect who wounded a K-9 Tuesday night.
The officers responded to reports of an armed robbery at the Bank of America branch on Watson Road and were able to track the suspect's car to 221st Avenue and Van Buren, according to KNXV.
When they approached the suspect, he told them that he had a gun in his back pocket.
That's when they shot him with bean bags in an effort to stop him.
When that failed, the officers sent one of their police dogs after the suspect, who then opened fire on the animal, Department of Public Safety spokesman Carrick Cook told the news station.
The K-9 was shot multiple times and the officers returned fire, wounding the suspect.
The suspect later succumbed to his injuries.
Officials said that the police dog is being treated for its injuries and is expected to survive.
The incident is currently under investigation.
