A Phoenix police officer was seriously injured after he was allegedly shot multiple times by a man riding a bicycle Sunday night.
Officer Peter Bennett was hit in the face, right thigh and right arm following the incident that occurred in a high-crime area near 21st and Georgia avenues around 8:30 p.m., according to KNXV.
Three additional bullets struck the officer in the chest, but he was saved by his vest.
Police Chief Daniel Garcia told the newspaper that the officer is in "tremendous spirits" and was talking clearly at the hospital Monday, where he was expected to undergo surgery.
He said that the officer saw the suspect display "suspicious activity" while patrolling the area and told the man to get off his bicycle.
Garcia said that at that point, the suspect dropped his backpack and started shooting at Bennett, who returned fire.
Officers found the suspect out a block away with gunshot wounds to both of his hands.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was booked into jail and charged with attempting to kill a police officer.
