MILWAUKEE
A Milwaukee Police officer is recovering from injuries and a suspect is in critical condition following a violent confrontation Saturday afternoon, according to a department spokesperson.
The incident happened around 1:45 p.m. in the 3300 block of N. 30th Street.
Police said that while on patrol, an officer saw a man climbing a fence at United Milwaukee Scrap, holding a large suitcase. According to authorities, the officer followed the man and attempted to question him.
Police said the suspect resisted arrest, tearing the officer's badge and radio microphone from his shirt and wrestling him to the ground, causing cuts and scrapes to the officer's arms.
A witness told police that the suspect tried to take the officer's weapon.
The officer chased the suspect who had again fled. Police said that during a violent struggle, the officer fired his gun at the suspect.
The 42-year-old suspect was in critical condition Saturday evening. Police said the man has an extensive criminal arrest history for drug offenses, battery, theft, domestic violence, resisting arrest, escape and criminal damage to property and burglary.
The officer involved is a 37-year-old man with 15 years of service with MPD. As is standard operating procedure, the officer was placed on administrative duty pending the completion of the investigation.
