JERSEY CITY, N.J. --

Authorities say at least one suspect was wounded in a shooting involving two police officers inside the Holland Tunnel that shut down the New Jersey-to-New York lane, causing a massive traffic jam during rush hour and well into the evening.

It was not immediately clear what triggered the police chase Friday. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said one suspect was shot in the left forearm and taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan.

Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman said the two officers were injured, but not by gunfire. He would not elaborate. The officers were in good condition at Jersey City Medical Center.

Authorities say the shooting began about 6:10 p.m.; they believe at least five shots were fired.
