TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Toledo Police Department has released body-worn camera footage showing a Toledo police officer rescuing a disabled resident from a burning home on Wade Street earlier this week.

According to the department, officers responded on June 22 to a reported structure fire in the 500 block of Wade Street. An officer arrived within minutes and observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the front of the residence.

Dispatch information indicated that a disabled resident remained trapped inside and was unable to escape. After forcing entry into the home, the officer encountered heavy smoke, intense heat and near-zero visibility.

According to police, the officer heard a woman's voice from deeper inside the residence and forced open a blocked interior door. After moving debris obstructing the entrance, he located the resident holding onto her walker.

The officer then removed the woman from the home and brought her to safety outside. Once outside, the resident informed the officer that her brother was still inside the residence.

Crews with Toledo Fire & Rescue arrived shortly afterward and assisted the second resident from the home through a rear door.

Both occupants survived the fire and were treated for smoke inhalation. One resident was transported to a local hospital for additional treatment.

The department identified the officer as Ben Cousino. Following the rescue, Cousino visited the hospitalized resident, Maria, to check on her recovery.

According to Toledo police, Maria is recovering well and remains in good spirits. Her brother is also reported to be doing well as the family continues recovering from the incident.

The released body camera footage documents the officer's response and rescue efforts, providing an example of the challenges officers may face when arriving first at active fire scenes before fire personnel are on location.
