Package Tests Positive for Homemade Explosive Substances at Arizona Supreme Court
PHOENIX — Authorities responded Monday to a suspicious package received at the Arizona Supreme Court that tested positive for homemade explosive substances. The package, delivered to the court’s mailroom around 8 a.m., contained multiple vials, two of which were confirmed to contain explosive material, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS).
Multiple buildings in the area of 15th Avenue and Washington Street, including the Court of Appeals Division I, were evacuated as a precaution. Court staff were instructed to leave the premises and work remotely while law enforcement conducted a sweep of the buildings, according to KNXV-TV.
The DPS cleared the state court’s building later in the day, allowing normal operations to resume Tuesday. The Arizona Supreme Court confirmed in a statement that business hours would return to normal.
Officials have not released additional information as the investigation remains ongoing. Earlier Monday, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office investigated a bomb threat in Queen Creek, which was later determined to be a hoax.
