Texas Shooting Leaves 1 Dead, 9 Injured After Police Standoff

Police in Midland, Texas, responded to an active shooter incident and were in a standoff with the suspect Friday morning for over an hour, according to the Midland Police Department.

The suspect has now been confirmed deceased and the standoff is over, city officials said about 11:35 a.m. Officials have not said how the suspect died.

At least one victim was killed in the mass shooting and at least nine injured victims were hospitalized, officials said at a livestreamed news conference.

The shooting happened in the 4600 block of West Wall Street, near Industrial Avenue in southwest Midland, city officials said in a statement posted to social media.

While the standoff has ended, the area is still not cleared and road closures remain in place for the foreseeable future, according to Midland police.

Officers heard gunfire coming from a building Friday morning and “worked quickly to secure and clear the area,” police said.

Midland police deployed armored units and partner agencies to assist with the response.

Assessment of injuries is still ongoing, but at least one death was reported in the shooting, Mayor Lori Blong said.

Midland Memorial Hospital told The Associated Press that four people were in operating rooms and five others who were treated at the hospital were in stable condition. Officials told ABC News that three of the victims were later discharged from the hospital.

NBC News reported one victim was taken to Odessa Medical Center Hospital.

A Family Unification Center is open at Midland Memorial Hospital. Anyone seeking information about loved ones can go to the hospital for assistance.

The suspect’s name has not been released, and the motive for the shooting is under investigation.

The Texas Municipal Police Association said that multiple law enforcement agencies in the Midland area were responding to the active shooter situation.

“Please keep all law enforcement involved, their families, and the Midland community in your thoughts and prayers,” the police union said.
