What to know

  • Nine people were injured—including four Canton Township police officers—after a tractor‑trailer and a pickup collided Wednesday afternoon at Ford and Haggerty roads in Canton Township.
  • Police said officers were injured while rescuing trapped occupants, and injuries ranged from minor to critical for all those hurt.
  • The intersection, initially closed in all directions, reopened Wednesday night as authorities continued to investigate the cause of the fiery crash.

Five of the injured were occupants of vehicles involved in the crash, police said. The other four were officers who were hurt trying to rescue the trapped occupants.

Bert Sterling of Westland was in the area at the time of the crash. He said there appeared to be two vehicles involved in the collision, the tractor-trailer and a pickup that struck it while the driver was attempting to make a turn.

The intersection remains closed in all directions as crews work to clear the scene, the Canton Public Safety Department said in a press release.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while crews work to manage the scene and ensure public safety," the department said.

Police said they are unsure when the intersection will reopen to traffic.

Authorities have not commented on the cause of the crash or identified anyone who was hurt in the incident.
