One person was rescued from a vehicle that plunged into the Long Island Sound in West Haven on Tuesday — an effort that sent multiple police officers who entered the frigid waters to the hospital.

The incident was reported in the morning hours at the end of Roberts Street, a dead-end, according to Lt. Patrick Buturla of the West Haven Police Department.

Buturla said officers responded to reports of a vehicle that had entered the water. Upon arrival, they immediately jumped into the water and rescued the sole person in the vehicle, according to Buturla.

The driver was taken to a hospital, Buturla said. His condition was not immediately clear.

The officers who dove into the water were also taken to a hospital for an evaluation as a precaution, Buturla said.

Buturla did not say what led to the vehicle entering the water. Additional information was not immediately available.
