Three New York police officers were wounded late Friday when a suspect first began shooting during a domestic disturbance and then exchanging gunfire following a foot chase.

The incident began at about 10:15 p.m. when Rochester police responded to a domestic incident, WROC-TV reports. Once officers reached the scene, they encountered the caller, who was carrying his own gun and told officers that his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend had tried to break in to her house.

The officers and the caller found the suspect, who immediately opened fire. Two officers and the caller were struck, and the suspect fled.

Police confronted the suspect a second time, and a shootout erupted. Another officer was struck, but police returned fire, fatally shooting the suspect.

The officers and the caller were rushed to the hospital. The caller was struck multiple times, but his injuries were not considered life threatening.

One officer is in stable condition after being struck multiple times in the upper body. His ballistic vest is credited with saving his life.

Another officer also struck in the upper body is in critical but stable condition. The third officer, shot in the upper body, was seriously wounded, but his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

“This is always our biggest nightmare during this time of the year when these types of incidents happen,” Mayor Malik Evans said.

The incident is under investigation.
