Four Baltimore Police Department officers and a suspect were injured in East Baltimore’s Ellwood Park neighborhood while attempting to make an arrest Tuesday morning.
While responding to an alleged assault on the 200 block of North Highland Avenue at about 10:38 a.m., the officers were injured trying to take a 29-year-old man into custody, department spokesperson Chakia Fennoy told The Baltimore Sun.
Bryant Maurice Allen tried to run after officers found him from a 17-year-old boy’s description of the man who assaulted him, according to a news release from the department Tuesday afternoon. Officers chased Allen and attempted to “subdue him using mace and a Taser.”
Allen punched an officer during the chase and “continued to resist and assaulted multiple officers” until he was shackled, the release said.
The officers, suspect and the 17-year-old who was attacked were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the release.
Allen will be arrested and charged when he is released from the hospital, the department said.
“Our officers put themselves in harm’s way every single day to protect this city and it is just truly unacceptable when they are assaulted while simply doing their jobs,” Police Commissioner Richard Worley said in the release.
“Allen is a repeat violent offender, who has been arrested more than 20 times by our members,” Worley said.
Mike Mancuso, chapter president of Baltimore City’s Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3, met with the officers at Shock Trauma and said they were “in good spirits,” according to a post on X.
“We will not tolerate attacks on law enforcement or anyone in our community, and we will continue to pursue those who pose a threat to public safety,” Worley said in the release.
“I commend our officers for their bravery and ask that you join me in sending them well wishes for a speedy recovery.”
