A Virginia police officer was injured while trying to break up a street takeover over the weekend involving a "large group of people" that acted disorderly and jumped on another officer's cruiser.
The incident happened at about 3 a.m. Sunday in Springfield when a Fairfax County police officer saw multiple cars drive into a commercial parking lot, DC News Now reports. When she investigated the parking lot, "the officer found a large group of individuals driving recklessly and in circles," according to police.
A large group of people surrounded the officer's cruiser, and at least one person tried to remove the vehicle's license plate. Members of the crowd jumped on the vehicle, banged on windows and prevented her from moving.
Dozens of officers responded as backup for the officer, and the group began to scatter. One officer suffered minor injuries when a fleeing driver crashed into a cruiser before speeding away.
That led to a chase of the hit-and-run driver, but the pursuing officer only kept pace for a brief time.
Police obtained multiple warrants on suspects ranging in age from 18 to 20.
