Watch Wis. Police Officer Save Elderly Man from Fire
Sept. 21, 2021
A Port Washington police officer was on a routine patrol when he heard popping and crackling sounds and saw a fireball erupt at a home.
A Wisconsin police officer saved an elderly man trapped inside a burning house last week.
The incident happened at about 5:40 p.m. Sept. 12 as Port Washington Police Officer Tony Becker was on patrol, the department stated in an online post. That's when he heard popping and crackling sounds, and then he saw a fireball erupt.
Becker raced to the scene and discovered a house engulfed in flames. When he reached the house, a 74-year-old woman walked out of the garage and told the Becker that her 79-year-old husband was still inside.
After trying to guide the man out of the house by his voice, Becker braved the smoke and flames to pull the victim safely out.
Becker was taken to the hospital and treated and released.
"We are thankful Officer Becker was in the area so quickly, and despite the dangers presented, was able to affect a rescue of the resident inside," the department stated. "His efforts exemplified PWPD’s commitment to human life above anything else."
