SPRINGFIELD, MA—A man accused of assaulting city police officers Monday afternoon was in a mental health crisis, his family reported to police.

On Monday around 2:30 p.m., police said that Christopher K. Jimenez, 27, approached an area on Cleveland Street where police were working a traffic detail in a construction area, and he hopped into a work truck.

Police received a 911 call from Jimenez’s family reporting that he was in a crisis, according to a report filed in court. Police went to the nearby home where Jimenez was outside talking to his brother and not making sense, the report says. He then pushed his brother, and police stepped in, according to the report.

Jimenez then punched one officer in the jaw, sending him backward, and he hit his head on the asphalt driveway, the report said.

Two other officers tried to grab Jimenez, who resisted and tried to kick them, according to the police report. One officer injured his wrist in the process. A call went out to additional police for service, and backup arrived when Jimenez was in handcuffs, said Ryan Walsh, a police spokesperson.

All three officers went to the hospital, one with a serious head injury, one with a hurt wrist, and the third for precautionary reasons, Walsh said. Jimenez also went to the hospital for minor injuries, according to the police report.

Jimenez was charged with resisting arrest, assault and battery, and assault and battery on a police officer. At his arraignment Tuesday, he pleaded not guilty and a judge set his bail at $250,000.

He was taken to Bridgewater State Hospital for a mental health evaluation.

The Hampden District Attorney’s Office could add additional charges related to the incident, but it depends on if the company wants to pursue charges, according to Walsh.
