An Ohio police officer was punched and bitten by a suspect this week while bystanders looked on, an attack that the local Fraternal Order of Police says should be condemned.

The incident happened Monday when an Akron police officer responded to a report of a burglary in progress, according to a Tuesday social media post FOP Lodge 7 President Brian Lucey. Once she reached the scene, she encountered two suspects. 

When she was identifying the pair, a third suspect exited from behind a plywood sheet on a building. Although she was outnumbered, she went to detain the third man.

"She followed her training and moved to arrest him, and he fought her from the start," Lucey wrote. "He punched her in the face. He bit her. She stayed in the fight, kept her composure, and took him into custody. Akron officers do this kind of work every day, usually with nobody watching."

During the assault, Lucey alleges that bystanders recorded the attack on their phones. Some even laughed, he said.

"Nobody stepped in to help her," Lucey wrote.

According to the Akron Beacon Journal, the suspect tried to take the officer's gun during the struggle. He also was found with a crack pipe and 5 grams of crack cocaine.

The suspect and the officer were taken to the hospital, where they were treated an released. The suspect faces multiple charges, including assaulting a police officer and drug possession.

The FOP president said residents "should be disgusted" by this incident and the reaction of witnesses. Lucey also called out city leaders for not immediately condemning the attack.

"We hope that changes soon," he wrote. "An officer who gets punched and bitten protecting a neighborhood should hear from the people who lead this city that they have her back."

On Wednesday, Chief Brian Harding released a statement about the incident, saying no officers should be attacked while performing their duties.

"Assaults against Akron police officers will not be tolerated, and we will work with the Summit County prosecutor's office to ensure that individuals who assault our officers are held accountable," he stated.

Mayor Shammas Malik also released a statement Wednesday.

"Public safety officials have taken an oath to serve and protect our residents. And while that oath comes with a level of inherent risk, knowing they are being asked to run into dangerous situations, it doesn't make them deserving of violence and it doesn't justify a callous response to an assault when it occurs," he stated. "People recording awful things and making jokes about them on the internet for clout are an embarrassment to themselves and performing a disservice to our community."

Lucey said he hopes there are consequences for the suspect.

"We’re also asking the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office to charge this suspect with every offense the evidence supports," he stated. "And if anyone who stood there filming wants to do something useful, they can turn that video over to the Akron Police Department."
