He knocked the deputy off her feet, and she hit the back of her head against the ground. Getting on top of her, Magann repeatedly punched the deputy in the head and face while continuing to grab her service weapon.

Finally, the deputy was able to get to her gun, and she shot Magann, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a sheriff's office news release.

The deputy was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for facial injuries. She also was evaluated for a concussion.

"This could've gone very very badly for the female deputy," said Bradshaw. "She literally was fighting for her life. She did a good job just making sure she was going to survive."

Magann had an extensive criminal history, including arrests for burglary, resisting an officer, fleeing and eluding law enforcement and other offenses. He was on probation for battery on a law enforcement officer.

"He's had a lot of bad contact with law enforcement," said Bradshaw.

The shooting is under investigation. Bradshaw said the deputy's injuries weren't life-threatening, and doctors were trying to make sure she didn't have a concussion.

"She saved her own life," he said. "Without a doubt, this guy was intent on getting that gun, without a doubt."
