ST. LOUIS—A 6-month-old boy was rescued from a hot vehicle Saturday afternoon by St. Louis police.
Officers were working an event in the 1400 block of North Kingshighway in north St. Louis when they were alerted that a baby was locked in a vehicle, police spokesperson Mitch McCoy posted on X. The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis hosted a community festival and school supply giveaway Saturday at its location at 1408 North Kingshighway.
The car was not running and had its windows up, according to McCoy. The baby was covered in sweat and was unresponsive.
He was given medical care and is now responsive and stable, McCoy said.
Both parents have been arrested and charged with first-degree endangering the welfare of a child and abuse or neglect of a child.
Police on Sunday identified them as Varden Lovett, 51, and K'Yana Curry, 32, both of Bellefontaine Neighbors in St. Louis County. They were both denied bond, court records show.
The St. Louis region has been in the grip of a heat wave for several days. Temperatures on Saturday afternoon reached 90 degrees, with the heat index topping 100.
The temperature inside a closed vehicle can climb to deadly levels within minutes, the National Weather Service warns.
