NYPD Prepares for America 250 Celebrations, Taylor Swift Wedding
What to Know
- The NYPD plans to deploy thousands of police officers, along with aviation, harbor, counter-drone, K-9 and heavy weapons units, to secure New York City's July 4 events and other major gatherings throughout the weekend.
- Police officials said there are no credible threats against the celebrations, but security measures are being increased because of the current threat environment and the large crowds expected for Sail4th250 events, fireworks displays and other festivities.
- The department also conducted a threat assessment at Madison Square Garden reportedly tied to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding, while officials announced street closures, transit adjustments and restrictions on bags and other items at public events.
Thousands of NYPD cops will be deployed throughout the city beginning Friday as the city braces for multiple Independence Day events … and Taylor Swift’s fairytale wedding.
Although there are no credible threats against any of Fourth of July events, police will create comprehensive screening entry points for all major public events throughout the weekend, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Wednesday.
“New York City will host the largest Independence Day celebration in our nation’s history,” Tisch said. “You’re going to see a large police presence, thousands of cops and aviation, harbor and counter drone teams as well as additional security measures you won’t see.”
Bomb sniffing K-9 dogs and heavy weapons teams will also be deployed, Tisch said.
“We continue to operate in a heightened threat environment,” she said. “(Because of) conflicts overseas, there have been spate of terror and targeted violence in the U.S. and other countries.”
Cops will be covering the land, sea, and air as New York celebrates the nation’s 250th Independence Day, beginning with an “international naval and air review” in New York Harbor on Friday, Mayor Mamdani said, appearing with Tisch at a press briefing at NYPD headquarters in Lower Manhattan.
“This is a busy celebratory time in our city with multiple major events,” Mamdani said. “We have a comprehensive security plan for each event, which begins with increasing deployment of officers across the five boroughs.”
“Hundreds of thousands of people will take part in the festivities and show the world what the city is all about,” he added.
Cops will be working 12-hour shifts as they monitor large crowds and keep the peace over the weekend.
Then there’s also international superstar Taylor Swifts wedding to Kansas City Chiefs football player Travis Kelce expected at Madison Square Garden this weekend, which will be a private event.
“While giving a briefing about major events I would be remiss not to mention an event we are tracking at Madison Square Garden,” Tisch said, not mentioning the happy couple by name. “The NYPD will have a detail in place, but we will not be going into more specifics.”
Since there was a foiled terror plot targeting a 2024 Swift concert in Europe, the NYPD did a threat assessment of the wedding, Tisch confirmed.
“We will have appropriate resources based on our threat assessments,” she said.
NYPD Harbor units will be out in both the East and Hudson Rivers for the Sail4th250 events on Saturday morning, which will include the largest parade of tall ships in American history — with each passing ship giving off a 21-gun salute. They will also be out that night for the Macy’s largest ever fireworks display set to feature more than 850,000 explosives, a laser light show and multiple fireworks barges.
With so many water events, the NYPD is coordinating with both the U.S. Coast Guard and the Navy, Mamdani said.
Those wanting to attend the Sail4th250 or fireworks events, can’t bring large bags, lawn chairs, coolers or anything that will block anyone view, Tisch said. Everyone is encouraged to take public transportation, with the MTA supplying additional trains.
The Brooklyn Bridge will be closed to traffic for most of the day Saturday, Tisch said.
The weekend will end Sunday with multiple street closures throughout Midtown in preparation for a FIFA World Cup game.
