THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- A Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputy was killed in a line-of-duty crash during a DWI-related investigation on Interstate 45 North early Sunday morning, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
On June 28 at approximately 2:39 a.m., deputies responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a multi-vehicle crash near the Woodlands Parkway exit on Interstate 45 North. Deputies arrived on scene and began assisting with the DWI crash investigation, including directing traffic to protect motorists and first responders working the incident.
While deputies were actively working the scene, a heavy-duty commercial truck pulling a trailer struck Deputy Erika Serrato, 24, who was outside her patrol vehicle directing traffic. The truck also struck two marked patrol vehicles with emergency lights activated.
Serrato, assigned to District 2, was transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said she had served with the agency for six years.
An additional Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputy sustained minor injuries after being struck by debris. He was treated at a local hospital and released.
One of the drivers involved in the initial crash, identified as Ashton Jammer, 34, was charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) and will be transported to the Montgomery County Jail, according to authorities.
The driver of the commercial vehicle that struck Deputy Serrato was also transported to a local hospital. The crash remains under investigation.
“Our hearts are broken today,” said Sheriff Wesley Doolittle. “Deputy Serrato made the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting our community. We ask that you keep her family, friends, and fellow deputies in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. We grieve alongside them.”
