NYPD Nabs Stabbing Suspect who Injured Officer with Thrown Object

The attacker wanted for striking a cop in the head and causing a cut that needed 11 staples to close, was nabbed Friday morning, police said.

Sergio Santiago, 41, was nabbed just past 9:10 a.m. at Kingsbridge Road and Briggs Ave. by officers who recognized him from the photos released to the media after the Thursday assault.

Santiago resisted arrest when officers approached him, according to law enforcement. Charges against him were pending.

He has at least six prior arrests, including for assaulting a cop in 2023. Police say he was also wanted on a bench warrant for not showing up in court for an incident in which he received a summons.

The Thursday assault happened 5:20 p.m. Thursday on the mezzanine level at the Fordham Road subway station near E. 188th St. in Fordham.

Santiago threw some sort of blunt object at the cop, who with his partner was trying to arrest the suspect for a stabbing earlier in the day, police said.

The stabbing happened near E. 167th St. and Gerard Ave. in Concourse shortly after 12 p.m. — about two miles from the subway stop.

That victim was taken to BronxCare Hospital Center in stable condition for a non-life threatening wound. Since then, he has refused to cooperate with police, according to a law enforcement source.
