A Cobb County police officer saved a newborn’s life on Thursday after an unexpected roadside delivery.
While conducting an unrelated traffic stop, Officer William Desaussure was approached by a driver who urgently asked for help, telling Desaussure that his wife was in active labor and that they were not going to make it to the hospital.
According to police, Desaussure immediately responded and reached the mother, who had just delivered the baby inside the vehicle, within moments.
The newborn was not breathing and Desaussure began performing chest compressions with help from a Cobb County 911 dispatcher. After several compressions, the baby began to breathe, police report.
Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services responded to the scene and transported both the mother and newborn to the hospital for further care.
Both the mother and baby have since been released from the hospital and are “doing well” according to police.
“As first responders, officers never know when or where they may be called upon to act,” the Cobb County Police Department wrote. “On this day, Officer Desaussure was in the right place at the right time, and his quick response helped ensure this child entered the world safely. We extend our congratulations to the Preston family on the birth of their child and wish them continued health and happiness,” police wrote.
