SAN LEANDRO, California -- San Leandro police said they shot at and arrested an armed suspect who fled from an attempted traffic stop overnight Monday.
The San Leandro Police Department said one of its officers tried to stop a black Mercedes sedan a few minutes before 12:30 a.m., but the car sped off and crashed into a curb at the corner of Davis and Alvarado streets. It's not clear why police wanted to stop the Mercedes.
People in the car ran away, including the driver, who police said was spotted carrying a gun. Officers subsequently found the suspect on railroad tracks west of Alvarado, still holding a rifle, which they ordered the suspect to drop, according to a department news release.
The suspect did not drop the gun, which led to a police shooting, the department said. But neither the suspect nor any officers were injured, police said. The suspect was arrested and officers retrieved the gun.
The officer involved in the shooting has been with the department for 4 1/2 years and has been placed on administrative leave, per usual police protocol. No other details were immediately available.
The department said the incident would be investigated in accordance with its policy on officer-involved shootings. Police will conduct their own criminal and administrative investigations, and San Leandro's independent police auditor will also review the matter. An investigation from Alameda County prosecutors will happen simultaneously.
